I can’t believe that the kind of land piracy described in this article is a big problem in California.  Maybe this happens on private land sometimes but it can’t be widespread.  Just think this guy had 300 acres, 80 head of bison, a supposedly illegal marijuana crop that covered one third of his land and he didn’t have a clue.

When I see something like this, whether it is a large outdoor grow out in the sticks or a grow house in Arcata or Eureka, I think sharecropper.  Deniability, baby.  The folks described in this article could be innocent victims of course, but I think there are lots of landowners who grow by proxy with sharecroppers.

Mattole Unified, Scotia Union Elementary in Humboldt County and Ukiah Unified and Round Valley Unified in Mendocino are on the list of  110 school districts in California that are in trouble.  There are four districts in trouble in Shasta County as well.

Status Report Eureka – Tsunami Warning March 11

10:02  SO FAR NO INJURIES  OR SEVERE DAMAGE REPORTED IN EUREKA AREA THOUGH THERE ARE (UNVERIFIED) REPORTS OF DAMAGE IN CRESCENT CITY HARBOR AREA.

8:21 AM We had a power outage in Eureka from approx 7 AM until shortly after 8 AM.  According to radio this was a shutdown of the PG&E plant here in order to protect it.

Most schools in Eureka, Arcata and other coastal areas of Humboldt are closed.

The first wave was supposed to hit around 7:22 but there are no reports yet of any damage or unusual wave activity in the area.  The Point just reported that Humboldt  Bay is starting to recede that will need to be verified.

Highway 101 is closed in several places between Eureka and Crescent City, with a closure between Eureka and Arcata as well.

Crescent City is evacuated to 9th st.   Eureka waterfront is apparently evacuated to 4th st. (heard on radio but unverified) but I am not going out to verify that.   LOOKING DOWN THE HILL TOWARDS THE EUREKA WATERFRONT EVERYTHING LOOKS NORMAL 10 AM  note: thanks to Kym Kemp my confusion over the evacuation order  is solved.  In Eureka the order was voluntary and extended to the area west of Broadway and north of 2nd Street.

At this time there is no verifiable damage from this event.

Lots of radio stations are off the air due to their transmitters being in vulnerable locations.

This is kind of ironic, the area around Garberville (So Humboldt and Mendocino) probably has as much pot as anywhere else on earth.  But this is the first legal dispensary.  🙂

Federal regulators are instructing North Coast banks to scrutinize their customers’ financial transactions for signs of money laundering and drug deals, the result of the region’s reputation for marijuana production.

Evidence of the policy emerged last month, when the largest bank in Mendocino County [Savings Bank of Mendocino County] notified shareholders that federal banking regulators were requiring it to closely watch its accounts because the North Coast had been designated a high-risk area for money laundering.
