In town after town across America these days one can physically see the economic mantras of an entire generation turning to boarded-up wasteland before one’s eyes. Shopping malls, which changed the American landscape within the course of a generation, are dying week by week.

Take the Bayshore Mall in my own town of Eureka, northern California — a covered, pedestrian arcade opened in the 1980s, owned by the Utah-based General Growth company.

A brief history of Humboldt’s Mental Health Operation

“Sometime during all of this Humboldt, along with Kern County had become experimental CalMAP counties. CalMAP (California Medication Algorithm Project) means that if you required (require is different then want or even need) mental health services, and the government is the payee, then the first, second, and third courses of treatment you will receive is automatically atypical-antipsychotics, antipsychotics, and other mental health drugs respectively.”

We Need Factories in Eureka and Humboldt County

We need some factories here in Humboldt County and especially here in Eureka.

We don’t need to turn ourselves into China.  We don’t need sweatshops.  We must insist that our factories do not adversely effect our environment or quality of life.  We must insist that the employees of the factory be represented by an independent union, and also that the employees have some ownership of the enterprise.

We do need places (factories) that produce things of value to us and also provide a reasonable place for people to work.

We also need some factories here for survival in these uncertain times.  We need reasonable local production of the basics of life – food, shelter, and clothing.

I suggest that we start with a basic clothing factory.  A factory to turn out shirts and pants for men, women and children.

Clark and Atkins Score Decisive Debate Win Over Republican Rivals

In tonight’s League of Women Voters debate George Clark and Linda Atkins displayed a grasp of the city’s problems and a set of concrete solutions to them that the Republican slate of Jager and Endert were unable to match.  The Republican twosome were at best able to muster up some tired old cliches.

It is time to move Eureka into the 21st Century.  The choice is clear.

Linda Atkins – Transportation Plan – Aug. 23

Transportation Policy Rollout

Saturday, August 23rd at 1pm, Linda Atkins will be rolling out her Transportation Policy. Linda worked 23 years for CalTrans and has experienced firsthand the problems pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists all face in Eureka. Given that Eureka often leads in per-capita related traffic deaths, Linda regards transporation as a Public Safety issue.

Linda will speak for about 20 minutes and will take questions afterwards. There will be a Press Availability immediately after the event.
