St. John and the Sinners Rock Against Police Brutality

ARCATA – On Friday May 22nd popular local classic rock and blues band, St. John and the Sinners plus special guests will play a benefit for Redwood Curtain CopWatch at Humboldt Brews. Show starts at 8 PM, costs $5 and is 21 and over. Humboldt Brews is located at 856 10th Street, Arcata. For more information call (707) 633-4493 or email copwatchrwc@riseup.net.

Redwood Curtain CopWatch is part of a larger movement of self organized CopWatch groups throughout the US. Local efforts seek to intervene in the drastic rise of the presence, militarization, and violence of police, and build support networks based on self-determination, caring, and concrete needs.

Watching the police is a necessity, and everyone can and should watch the police when someone is stopped. If people aren’t aware of and actively speaking out against abusive police, it will continue to get worse,” said CopWatcher Sara Hamilton. “We strengthen and empower our communities by asserting our rights, observing the police and demanding police accountability.

In order to inform people of their constitutionally protected rights when dealing with law enforcement, CopWatch does on-going ‘Know Your Rights’ trainings. Awareness of rights allows people to cop watch any time. Creating this kind of culture has been shown to curtail police brutality, such as in Berkeley, where CopWatch is well established.

CopWatch is very important for our community; it keeps people safe from police brutality and helps the police from making mistakes that would hurt their integrity,” said musician St. John.

Redwood Curtain CopWatch was formed upon the heels of several police shootings of residents, including sixteen-year-old Christopher Burgess and grandmother Cheri Lynn Moore. Redwood Curtain CopWatch can be seen out on patrol with identifying patches.
