Uh Oh: German E. Coli is New Hybrid “Super-Toxic” Antibiotic Resistant Strain

update via Discover Magazine:

“A German researcher found that the strain’s DNA contains small sequences from other E. coli strains and from plague bacteria, which may help explain its ferocity—though there’s no way, he emphasizes, that these bacteria could cause any form of plague.”

“E. coli is often spread when food, meat or water come into contact with cattle feces, but it’s unclear whether this rare strain is transmitted the same way as more common ones. Wildlife feces or dirty factory equipment could also be transmitting the bacteria.”

update: now 3 cases in US via USA Today:

“Three Americans who traveled recently to Germany contracted the food-poisoning bacteria and developed haemolytic-uraemic syndrome (HUS), which affects the blood and kidneys, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told CNN. All are in U.S. hospitals.”

update: 2 cases in United States via Wa Po:

“At least two cases of the unusual strain of E. coli that is causing a deadly outbreak in Europe have been reported in the United States, and federal and state health authorities are monitoring closely for any additional cases, a federal health official said Thursday.”

via Science Magazine:

“Now, early results from sequencing projects of the enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli(EHEC) strain appear to confirm that a never-before-seen hybrid, combining the worst of several bacterial strains, is causing the havoc.

The Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), in Shenzhen, China—which today announced that it has sequenced the microbe’s entire 5.2-million-base-pair genome—says that its acquisition of several virulence genes make this EHEC strain “supertoxic.””

“…the analysis also confirmed that the microbe is resistant to many antibiotics. These include aminoglycoside, the macrolides, and the beta-lactams—”all of which makes antibiotic treatment extremely difficult,…””

Scottish Nationalists Take Majority in Scottish Parliament

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on May 6, 2011 by highboldtage

They vow to hold a plebiscite on Scottish independence from the U.K. within five years.

“The statistics were devastating: the SNP took Labour seats in every city in Scotland and, Orkney and Shetland aside, wiped out the Liberal Democrats. The SNP’s vote jumped by 13%, while Labour’s dipped.”

The great rice crisis: Rationing at UK supermarkets as world prices soar 70 per cent

By CHRISTOPHER LEAKE

Supermarkets are rationing rice in some stores after panic-buying by customers worried about a global shortage.

Retailers including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Lidl have introduced quotas for the staple food, which has increased in price worldwide by 70 per cent in a year.

It is believed to be the first time major stores have limited purchases of such foodstuffs since sugar and bread were restricted in the Seventies because of strikes by producers.
