British truckers protest fuel prices in London

LONDON (AP) — Hundreds of truckers drove to Britain’s Parliament on Wednesday to protest the rising cost of fuel.

Police closed a section of a highway into the capital to let the trucks gather, then escorted the 200 trucks in convoys of 20 into the center of town. Dozens of protesters on foot gathered outside the Houses of Parliament, waiting to go inside to lobby members of Parliament and holding placards that said “Fair Play on Fuel.”

Run-dry: A Shell petrol station in central London is already out of fuel on the first day of the tanker driver strike

Motorists were warned not to ‘waste a drop of fuel’ today as petrol stations began to run dry after tanker drivers started a four-day strike.

Hundreds of union members seeking a pay rise from Shell picketed petrol terminals as many others also turned back from refineries in solidarity.

The Shell drivers have refused an improved pay offer of 7.3 per cent backdated to January, which would take average earnings to more than £39,000.

World response needed to oil crisis: British PM

LONDON (AFP) — Britain on Wednesday gave the go-ahead for two new North Sea oil fields, as Prime Minister Gordon Brown warned the world faced a “great oil shock” fuelled in part by increased demand and tight supplies.

Business Secretary John Hutton said the fields some 150 kilometres (93 miles) northeast of the Shetland Islands, off northern Scotland, would peak at up to 50,000 barrels per day, with a total output of 50 million barrels.

He also outlined government plans for new oil and gas fields to be carved out of unprofitable parts of about 30 existing fields off Britain’s coast, which could see 20,000 barrels a day added to daily production.

The announcement came as Brown and his finance minister Alistair Darling met heads of the Oil and Gas UK industry body in northeast Scotland to push for greater output from Britain’s North Sea fields.

Afterwards, Brown said: “I met the oil producers today because we are facing the third great oil shock in decades.”

LONDON: Hundreds of trucks rolled into central London on Tuesday to jam a major route into the capital to protest the rising price of fuel.

Around 300 truck drivers honked their horns and parked on a highway on the edge of the city, forcing police to close off a section of road and divert hundreds of motorists during the busy morning rush hour.

Truckers protesting the soaring cost of fuel in Britain – where diesel now costs more than $9 a gallon – called for Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government to lower fuel taxes for trucking companies.

LONDON, May 21 (UPI) — Truck drivers in Britain are planning a clog-the-streets protest for next Tuesday in London to draw attention to fast rising diesel prices, lobbyists said.

“Hundreds of U.K. transport firms are being driven to the wall. Thousands of U.K. jobs are being lost,” Mike Presneill, a member of lobby group Transaction 2007, told Sky News Wednesday.
