Three Initiatives For Eureka

shortlink here:

mnemonic link here:

Here is a proposal for three initiatives for Eureka this year.   One to improve the economy, one to improve and modernize the Eureka Police Department, and a third to modernize Eureka City Council elections and bring them into the current century.

The first initiative will create a tax on vacant storefronts in Eureka.   Have you noticed how blighted the commercial districts of Eureka are?  There is a reason for this.  The free market has been perverted.   A tax on vacant store fronts will restore the balance of the free market and invigorate the local economy.   Think of it as a sin tax, akin to taxes on cigarettes.   Empty storefronts are bad for the Eureka economy.   This is not a tax designed to raise revenue.   Actually, the more successful it is, the lower the revenues will be.   What needs to be determined is the most effective level of taxation to accomplish our goal.

The second initiative will be an ordinance requiring all new hires in the Eureka Police Department to have  a four year liberal arts degree from an accredited college or university.    This should have happened years ago,

The third initiative will institute instant run off voting for Eureka City Council elections.    The current first past the post system is anti-democratic and is designed to keep the good old boys in power and it is time to scrap it.   Its time for some real democracy in Eureka.

Obviously over the next year my personal main energy must remain with the Eureka Fair Wage Act campaign.   I want to see other people come forward and work with these ideas for positive change in Eureka.   I will help kick start them and then you will take them over.   We need to do this.  I will meet in Eureka with anyone interested in these initiatives.   CITIZEN DEMOCRATIC ACTION WORKS!

  1. You’ll have to help me on part of this… I was up until nearly 3 am this morning after a 4 hour DSO show up in Boulder. My mind is still a trifle fogged over. A vacant store tax would do what exactly? Other than encourage the owners to lower their rentals to attract tenants?

  2. Yes that’s exactly the point, to stimulate lower rents and fill up empty stores with new business. Landlords are exploiting the tax code to let buildings sit vacant. This ordinance will fix that perversion of the tax code.

OaklandBill is just what his blog is…HIGH. There is no reason for instant runoffs in Eureka because the city council elections are final the moment the election results are certified, whether there are two candidates or ten…there are NO Runoffs, you dumbass, so “instant runoffs” are unnecessary.

  4. What is needed exactly in Eureka elections – to make them more democratic – are some form of run offs.

I would be happy with a primary in June and a run off in November, but you would no doubt claim that that would be too expensive. With instant run-offs that issue is moot, you can have your election in June if you want.

We are not only changing a few things around here but we are stepping up the level of political dialogue. Thanks for your contribution you rep your side very well.

OaklandBill, you have no idea what “side” I “rep”. In fact I don’t represent any side except the one for common sense. I am a semi progressive, fully in support of Obamacare, so ponder that one, asswipe.

You just can take it that elections have consequences and votes count. Things like instant runoffs and ranked voting leave us with the disaster of Jean Quan in Oakland, something you know well of, Bill, since you live down there.

  6. I think Obamacare is a fraud, as I have posted here, so should I be surprised if some anonymous claims to like it? I don’t give a fuck. We won’t have adequate health care in this country until we have socialized health care like every other industrialized first world country does.

The only people who like Obama care are entitled corporate Republicans and entitled Democratic legacy unions. The rest of us are fucked.

    have a peaceful day,
