“Jackson Rancheria imposed layoffs; Cache Creek scrapped a major expansion. Even Thunder Valley – probably the most successful casino in the Sacramento area – scaled back the luxury hotel it opened last summer.

Red Hawk seems to have been hit the hardest of all. It opened during the worst of the recession, in late 2008, and lost customers when Thunder Valley’s hotel opened. It’s now trying to gain traction with a marketing strategy that emphasizes “value” pricing on food and other amenities in an attempt to draw bargain-hunting gamblers.”
