Obama Outflanks the Republicans on Libya

First of all, I am not in the Obama camp, I voted for Nader.

But still it is pleasant to see Obama outflank the Republicans on Libya.  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s very tough statement demanding the dictator’s departure was vintage G. W. Bush (you do remember him demanding the departure of what’s his name, you know the last Arab despot?)  Of course Ms. Clinton’s own government is currently pursuing covert wars on at least three continents, and the tough stance with Libya may be largely for (world) public consumption and a hedge against the possibility that the Libyan Revolution may actually succeed.

The Republicans, especially the right wingers can only stand around with their thumbs up their collective asses because their corporate masters are all making money by making nice with Mr. Qaddaffi and every other mideast potentate you can name.  Plus ya just gotta be careful when you start siding with actual revolutionaries.

As a result, Obama and the Democrats will be seen as strong and the Republicans as weak on the happenings in the Arab world.  And that’s ok with me.

It seems to me that the wave sweeping through Arabia (and it may spread globally) is a movement for modernity.  It is striking to me how large a role that the youth and the women are playing in these countries.  In most of these movements women are seen as equals by the participants, and that is modernity.

And that is also why the Republicans are so unsure about all this.  They don’t believe in equality for women.

have a peaceful day,
