British truckers protest fuel prices in London

LONDON (AP) — Hundreds of truckers drove to Britain’s Parliament on Wednesday to protest the rising cost of fuel.

Police closed a section of a highway into the capital to let the trucks gather, then escorted the 200 trucks in convoys of 20 into the center of town. Dozens of protesters on foot gathered outside the Houses of Parliament, waiting to go inside to lobby members of Parliament and holding placards that said “Fair Play on Fuel.”

“if they get word of a convoy they are going to blockade the city,”

But Gramuglia said at a recent meeting, city leaders raised concerns about the convoy blocking police and fire vehicles in the event of an emergency.

“They said under no circumstances do they want the trucks in the city. They said if they get word of a convoy they are going to blockade the city,” he said.

Truck convoy expected to lock state Capitol; CDTA routes affected

Declaring their intentions to “shut down the state government,” truckers are planning to travel to Albany Thursday morning to protest high diesel taxes and the so-called Ton Mileage Tax, along with the new increase on Thruway tolls.

“It’s apparent that stubborn politicians in Albany would rather have New Yorkers fill their tanks in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont and Pennsylvania,” Vincent Gramuglia, president of Countryside Fuels and owner of the Betty Beaver Fuel Stops in upstate New York. said in a statement announcing the rally.

Run-dry: A Shell petrol station in central London is already out of fuel on the first day of the tanker driver strike

Motorists were warned not to ‘waste a drop of fuel’ today as petrol stations began to run dry after tanker drivers started a four-day strike.

Hundreds of union members seeking a pay rise from Shell picketed petrol terminals as many others also turned back from refineries in solidarity.

The Shell drivers have refused an improved pay offer of 7.3 per cent backdated to January, which would take average earnings to more than £39,000.

Teamsters strike against Allen Park car hauler

The Detroit News

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters sent its members on strike at 9 this morning against the nation’s No. 2 car hauler in the United States in a dispute over court-approved pay cuts and other contract issues.

The union is upset that Performance Transportation Services, which delivers 2.7 million vehicles a year including 10,400 vehicles a day for General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., won federal bankruptcy court approval to immediately impose a 15 percent pay cut on 1,250 Teamster drivers through July 31.

Fred Zuckerman, Teamsters car haul director, said PTS workers nationwide walked off their jobs at 9 a.m. The company has 24 facilities across the country, including its corporate headquarters and seven sites in Michigan.
