Seidner Lags Bohn in Signage

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on April 17, 2012 by highboldtage

I have been transiting Eureka lately and I have noticed a few Cheryl Seidner yard signs, but Rex Bohn is out-signing her by at least 10 to 1.

I know that Seidner is pretty new to the campaign but she really needs to ramp it up.  The last couple campaigns run by the Dems in this town (Neely and Glass)  were both very slow starters and ultimately losers.  Name recognition will be important.

I am hearing Seidner ads on the radio, the ones featuring Patty Berg but so far I am not hearing any compelling reason why I should support Seidner.  Just feel good stuff.  It is not enough.

And please no support for the fantasy port and railroad to Red Bluff.  No politician dumb enough to support this will get my support.

I want to support Seidner, I will not support Bohn.  So my choice will be to support Seidner, De Modena (slim) or sit on my hands.  Please liberal Dems give me some positive reasons to support Seidner.

One interesting thing about the Bohn signage though is it mostly appears on commercial buildings, obvious rentals and a lot of vacant homes.  Obvious that Bohn is supported by the landlord class in this town.

Glass vs. Bohn?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on July 8, 2011 by highboldtage

I was just thinking about how fun a Larry Glass vs. Rex Bohn supervisorial race would be in Humboldt County.  I’m not sure how it could happen due to residential requirements (I am not sure if Glass lives  in District 1) but the idea is fascinating.

I need some designs for a flyer 8 x 11 B & W that is simple effective and free.  Please if I use it put a link or contact info to you or your organization in the flyer.

My health hasn’t been great this last year.  I will be doing this if I can.  Maybe I can’t, but I will try to do it at least 2 times a week.

The Good Ole Boys can be defeated!  We can prevent the corporate fascist obliteration of our local economy!

Its Time for a Vacancy Tax in Eureka

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on July 1, 2010 by highboldtage

It’s Time for a Vacancy Tax in Eureka.

Every vacant home in Eureka should be taxed at the rate of $250.00 per month in order to offset the cost to the city of extra services needed by vacant homes.  Every vacant business should be taxed at the rate of $1 per square foot per month in order to offset the cost to the city of extra services required by vacant businesses.

Imposing this vacancy tax will give landlords a financial incentive to rent out their property instead of letting it sit vacant.  Vacant homes lower the value of neighborhoods, while vacant businesses give the impression of a neglected and sad town.

Many of these vacant homes and buildings are owned by out of area banks and speculators that have benefitted directly or indirectly from the taxpayers from TARP and other programs.

The city of Eureka needs the money to maintain essential services and repair the infrastructure neglect of the last 10 years, and the bankers and speculators can afford to pay it.

The Writing’s Been On Eureka’s Wall for Two Years Now

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , on February 22, 2010 by highboldtage

Just to state the obvious.

The City of Eureka has to 1.  Cut spending or 2.  Raise taxes.  A third alternative, borrowing, seems to be no longer doable.  A fourth alternative, bankruptcy, is possible if the City Council does not take charge of this situation.

Glass and Atkins seem to be the only members of the council today that have the political courage to address the looming bankruptcy with reasonable proposals.  The city is rapidly running out of time and alternative solutions.  This is not a new crisis, I attended meetings of the Finance Advisory Board two years ago where the writing was on the wall!

State and Federal funding is about to run dry.  You don’t miss your water…..

The City Council must take charge now as the City Manager has painted himself into several corners at once and is now politically immobile.

That means one of the troika (Jones, Jager or Leonard) is going to have to come to his senses and make some tough votes.

If this drags on the voters are gonna be pissed in November.

have a peaceful day,
Bill

Ward Reform Fail In Eureka

Eureka true ward initiative fails to qualify for June ballot

Thadeus Greenson/The Times-Standard

An effort to put an initiative on the June ballot aiming to introduce a true ward system in Eureka has died quietly, with little fanfare or notice.

Councilwoman Linda Atkins, who spearheaded the effort to get the measure on the June ballot, confirmed Wednesday that proponents of the measure have given up the fight, falling well short of the necessary signatures. Confusion surrounding the process and submission deadlines, they say, hamstrung their efforts.

Eureka Safe Sleep Area Raided by Police

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , on December 7, 2009 by highboldtage

The Eureka safe sleep sanctuary zone was raided by police last night about 930 pm.

The zone was implemented in the parking lot of the Eureka City Hall a month ago by activists affiliated with the People Project.  According to reports there was one arrest – our sister Verbena.

This action came in the face of the refusal of the city manager David Tyson to implement any homeless services  zoning as required by state law under bill S-2, and the inaction of Mayor Bass in providing for emergency winter shelter for the homeless poor in our community, as any humane society should.

A similar raid of a homeless camp in Sacramento two months ago resulted in a lawsuit against the city of Sacramento and it is clear that David Tyson’s lack of compassion and reckless disregard of the law may lead to the same result here.

It is time for the Democrats in this city like Larry Glass and Linda Atkins to repudiate this kind of repression in favor of more compassionate solutions for the poor.  We know that the Republicans like Frank Jager and Mike Jones have no compassion at all and never will.  It is unclear to me at this time how meaningful Virginia Bass’s Democratic conversion was if she cannot even bring herself to open an emergency city shelter when people are shivering in the rain and wind.  If the Democrats want to elect a majority on the city council next year they had better pay attention to this issue or they will face opposition from their left as well as from the good ole boys from the right.

Chief Garr Neilsen is well aware that a homeless camp is a rational solution to these problems, he has personal experience with the Dignity Village in Portland, and he understands that such a campground will not create bigger problems as the selfish bigots in our community state.

have a peaceful day,

Bill
