Iraqi Woman Beaten to Death in El Cajon California

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 25, 2012 by highboldtage

update apr 4 “SAN DIEGO — Details in search warrants obtained by 10News’ media partner U-T San Diego appear to suggest the death of an Iraqi woman in her El Cajon home last month may not have been a hate crime.”

http://www.10news.com/news/30837032/detail.html

update via the Daily Beast http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/04/01/shaima-alawadi-s-brutal-murder-highlights-anti-muslim-activity-in-san-diego.html :

“But what isn’t being widely reported is that even before Alawadi’s death, San Diego-area Muslims were experiencing a notable increase in discrimination, bullying, and physical assaults, according to the local Council on America-Islamic Relations, or CAIR-San Diego.

In the first quarter of 2012, the number of hostile incidents against Muslims in and around San Diego was nearly equal to the total number of incidents in 2011, according to Hanif Mohebi, director of CAIR-San Diego.”

via the Sacramento Bee:

“EL CAJON, Calif. — A woman from Iraq who was found beaten next to a threatening note saying “go back to your country” has died, and police are investigating the possibility of a hate crime.

The daughter, Fatima Al Himidi, told KUSI-TV her mother had been beaten on the head repeatedly with a tire iron, and that the note said “go back to your country, you terrorist.”

A family friend, Sura Alzaidy, told UT San Diego (http://bit.ly/GYbfB7) that the attack apparently occurred after the father took the younger children to school. Alzaidy told the newspaper the family is from Iraq, and that Alawadi is a “respectful modest muhajiba,” meaning she wears the traditional hijab, a head scarf.

For the Battle-Scarred, Comfort at Leash’s End

By JANIE LORBER

WASHINGTON — Just weeks after Chris Goehner, 25, an Iraq war veteran, got a dog, he was able to cut in half the dose of anxiety and sleep medications he took for post-traumatic stress disorder. The night terrors and suicidal thoughts that kept him awake for days on end ceased.

The dogs are trained to jolt a soldier from a flashback, dial 911 on a phone and even sense a panic attack before it starts. And, perhaps most important, the veterans’ sense of responsibility, optimism and self-awareness is renewed by caring for the dogs.

Iraqi war veteran and former Army Pvt. Margaret Ortiz, 27, holds a photo of herself from Iraq in her room at the women’s shelter in Long Beach, Calif., Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009. The $15,000 Ortiz had in the bank when she left Iraq is long gone, spent on alcohol and cocaine. “You knew something was wrong with you, but you didn’t know what was wrong with you. Nobody knew, and so you couldn’t really handle it,” Ortiz said. She is one of the new faces of America’s homeless veterans population. Photo: Chris Carlson / AP

We should never forget that Iraqi society has been destroyed. The people of that unhappy land have lost everything — their homes, their schools, their neighborhoods, their mosques, their jobs, their careers, their professionals, their health care, their legal system, their women’s rights, their religious tolerance, their security, their friends, their families, their past, their present, their future, their lives. But they do have their surge.

Reno Army captain told to shut down blog from Iraq

By JESSICA ESTEPA • jestepa@rgj.com • July 24, 2008

“Where I come from, people don’t really join the military. It’s the modern Americana, where layers of white-collar contentment shield fears of a higher unknown and blueblooded pipedreams. Reno may sound like a unique place — and it is, at least the inner urban part that wavers between the rustic and the bizarre — but decades of suburban buildup has eroded that authenticity. The military, generally, does not come into play for this youth.”

– Lt. G, Nov. 17, 2007

The month before his Iraq deployment, Matt Gallagher started a blog.

Entitled “Kaboom: A Soldier’s War Blog,” his postings ranged from mission details to immortality and what would be included on a war soundtrack. To protect his identity and location, he went by the pseudonym “LT G” (for lieutenant), dubbed his platoon the Gravediggers and served in a place he called “Anu al-Verona.”

Gallagher, a Reno native, announced June 27 that he had been ordered to stop posting to “Kaboom” because of his May 28 post: “The Only Difference Between Suicide and Martyrdom is Press Coverage.”

Why Vincent Bugliosi Wants to Prosecute George W. Bush for Murder

Why Vincent Bugliosi Wants to Prosecute George W. Bush for Murder

By CORPORATE CRIME REPORTER

Former California prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi wants President Bush charged with murder.

Bugliosi – who in the early 1970s successfully prosecuted Charles Manson for the murder of Sharon Tate and six others – lays out his case against Bush in The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder (Perseus Books, 2008).

The book will hit book stores next week – Tuesday May 27, 2008.

“My motivation for writing this book is simple – to bring about justice,” Bugliosi says in a video posted on the book’s web site (prosecutionofbush.com).

“George Bush has gotten away with murder – thousands of murders,” Bugliosi says. “And no one is doing anything about it. The American people can’t let him do this.”

Bugliosi wants one or more of the fifty state attorneys general or one of the nation’s hundreds of district attorneys to step up and prosecute Bush for murder.

Post-War Suicides May Exceed Combat Deaths, U.S. Says

Post-War Suicides May Exceed Combat Deaths, U.S. Says

By Avram Goldstein

May 5 (Bloomberg) — The number of suicides among veterans of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may exceed the combat death toll because of inadequate mental health care, the U.S. government’s top psychiatric researcher said.

Community mental health centers, hobbled by financial limits, haven’t provided enough scientifically sound care, especially in rural areas, said Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He briefed reporters today at the American Psychiatric Association’s annual meeting in Washington.

Insel echoed a Rand Corporation study published last month that found about 20 percent of returning U.S. soldiers have post- traumatic stress disorder or depression, and only half of them receive treatment.
