Truckers Discuss Possible Strike Over Fuel Prices

DENVER (CBS4) ― Diesel prices are climbing higher and higher and truckers say it’s getting too expensive to stay in business. Now, there is talk of a strike to grab people’s attention.

Truckers are threatening to shut down the shipping industry in hopes of forcing some relief at the pumps. The price of diesel fuel soared this week to a record $4.06 a gallon. That’s a .27 cent jump in just two weeks.

Diesel prices are not as bad in Colorado as in a lot of other states, especially California. In a solidarity protest, several truckers shut down their rigs Monday in Pennsylvania, and truckers in Colorado are predicting more of that to come. Across the country, more and more truckers are calling for a nationwide strike on April 1.

“We stay out three days to a week, I think maybe people will start listening to us, because without our trucks, America stops,” Texas truck driver Pat Dreher said. “That’s just the way it is.”

“It would only take one day for us for people to understand what effect these drivers would have,” Kentucky truck driver Jennifer Kloc said. “Everything comes on a truck.”

I think they should strike, but it want help if the big operatops like wal-mart and other truckers don’t jump in.

  1. I disagree. I think the awareness is the big issue. Even if the big boys don’t jump in right now, it brings the problem to peoples attention.

A one day shutdown won’t solve the issues at hand, but it’ll bring them closer to the forefront. Truckers have been treated poorly for a very long time. It’s high time people knew that.

Unfortunatly the time has comefor us to take a stand. Fuel prices have made me loose everything including one of my vacation homes in Florida. It takes $800.00 to fill my tank and that is only 200 gallons of fuel which only takes me 1000 miles. on a trip that has 1300 miles they are paying $1200.00. Bottom line is between fuel and insurance, thats all I can afford.

  2. Hundreds of thousands of independent truckers parking their trucks April 1? It’s no joke? Dan Little, a trucking company owner to whom many give credit for the idea of an April 1 shutdown, is featured in a recommended-reading post, No Joke: Truckers to ‘Shut Down’ April 1.

A strike is only as effective as it is united. If we do not unite like Americans we will fail like fools.

A strike is a strike and if you are compassionate about the strike and are not a truck driver. I say call in sick to work for a day or two. Stop driving across the country. Cars, Trucks, Boats, Planes, Tractors everything.

  3. i have been waiting for this for a long time i for one am not a truck driver but i work for a company that cares about them and i for one also care what happens to you guys out there. you put your lives and cdl’s on the line every minute of everyday so we can have our everyday needs met. i had a driver as a friend his name is john blozs he was killed in a crash on jan 06 2007 that purely devistated his whole family. i hope that you guys all come into unity to make this a great success i for one can not afford the price at the pumps. and i know it even affects you drivers even more especially the mom and pop companies. may GOD protect each and every one of you and your families during this journey

We Rocked ATLANTA today with a 4 mile long convoy around 285. We made it almost completely around before GA Troopers started trying to stop us one at the time. We ignored their azz’s. We held our ground, and when they did take 6 troopers and block the front 5 trucks over, everyone behind us stopped, essentially shutting down 285 on the West side. The troopers wrote 5 warnings for impeding traffic. They really were just busting up the convoy, but as is usual with ruberr neckers, they made a huge scene monsterous. You guys ever seen 200 trucks pull off a very skinny shoulder and support the man in front of them? I was Proud to be an O/O today. Very Proud. I talked to Irishman briefly. I asked him for you guys to come chat it up with us and let’s unify our efforts. We have a great movement going on here in GA. CAPTDASH
